So, last week we had on Blume talking about his solo home service entrepreneurial adventure, and this week we look at someone who has done what many people choose to do: start a business while pursuing another career.
Interview – Doug Hetsch – All American Chimney, Louisville, KY
Key points from the interview:
- There’s more than one way to skin a cat, they say…I’ve never had to skin one, so I don’t know myself. But if the adage is indeed true, then Doug’s way to skin that cat (again, why?) is to progress in his aviation career while starting up his home contracting business.
- What is the reason that drives you? Doug’s was debt and lack of work. What’s your reason? Figure that out, write it down, and when you’re tempted to throw in the towel, refer back to the reason you’re doing this to begin with.
- Doug believes the home services business field is ripe for harvest. Specialized knowledge is an ever-increasing prime commodity given the busy schedules most people have these days. Sure, that info is available on YouTube…sort of…but does the homeowner have the time, the confidence or the patience to try it on their own?
- Accidents will happen…make sure one of your first steps is looking into general liability insurance. It covers your you-know-what, and marketing that you have the insurance can certainly make the customer feel more at ease and give them another reason to hire you.
